The history behind the wood sign

From the beginning of time, people have carved things into wood. This enduring material has long been used for sign making, allowing shopkeepers to cheaply but effectively advertise their business, families to display their ancestral insignia and artisans to craft signs of extraordinary beauty. Today, a quality wood sign continues to carry a timeless appeal for people as an object of worth and aesthetic appeal.

Wooden signs date back to antiquity, where shopkeepers would carve a rustic board of wood with the symbol of their shop to alert passers-by to their dwellings. In the Middle Ages, carved signs were ubiquitous, hanging over the cramped alleyways of London and obscuring the light of European cities. Legislation was even passed in the seventeenth century to regulate the distance a wood sign could project into the street, as shopkeepers became more and more competitive with their signage.

While in the Middle Ages signs were preferred for functionality, with carved symbols used to direct people in a largely illiterate society to a particular shop or shopkeeper, in the Renaissance signs were appreciated much more as objects of beauty.
